We separate our waste, take a reusable bag to the supermarket and skip the plastic straws. But have you ever looked in your laundry cabinet? Every year, the average household uses tens of kilograms of plastic bottles, purely to get our clothes clean.

The numbers don't lie. An average bottle of liquid detergent quickly weighs 1.5 to 2 kilograms and is made of thick, inflexible plastic. Even if you recycle, the production and transport of these bottles consume an enormous amount of energy. At Lavoa, we calculated that switching to laundry strips would save an average family about 2.5 kilograms of plastic per year. That may sound like a small number, but imagine if your whole street did this.

From truck to mailbox The problem is not only the plastic itself, but also the volume. Because liquid detergent is heavy and takes up a lot of space, hundreds of trucks drive around every day transporting 'water in plastic'. Our laundry strips are feather-light and fit in a cardboard envelope. Twenty times as many washes can fit in one truck if we switch to strips. That is a gigantic reduction in CO2 emissions.

No microplastics in our water In addition to the packaging, at Lavoa we also look at the contents. Many traditional detergents contain ingredients that are not fully biodegradable. Our strips dissolve completely and leave nothing behind. No microplastics ending up in our oceans, just clean laundry and a clean conscience.

A small step with a big effect Living more sustainably doesn't have to be complicated or cost more money. Plastic-free washing with Lavoa might be the easiest green switch you can make in your home. You save space, you save lugging things around, and you save our planet a lot of unnecessary plastic.
